Galena Park, named after the Galena Signal Oil Company of Texas, who built the first refinery there, offers moderately priced homes in tree-lined neighborhoods. Many residents of this area enjoy a short commute to the petroleum-chemical plants that surround the Port of Houston. Older wood-frame houses and 1960s brick tract homes make up the housing selection along many of the streets, ranging in price from starter homes to executive residences with finely manicured landscaping. Reasonable proximity to the San Jacinto College District's North Campus as well as the downtown campus of the University of Houston adds to the quality of life.
