Arverne is a neighborhood in borough of Queens, and is one of several neighborhoods nestled on the Rockaway Peninsula. Other areas include Bayswater, Edgemere, and Far Rockaway. It was initially developed by Remington Vernam, whose signature "R. Vernam" inspired the name of the neighborhood. The community prospered as a resort in the late 1800s, declined in the 1950s and then suffered destruction in the name of urban renewal in the following decade. Private developers have built new housing here in recent years.
