The peninsula was first permanently settled in 1633 as a fishing and trading village named Casco which later because Casco Bay. Portland, Maine has so much history it's next to impossible to get it all in. The Old Port is lined with small shops and original cobblestone streets making a definite tourist visit. There is also Baxter Boulevard, a 3.6 mile (6 km) recreation path perfect for a long stroll or jog around the beautiful bay. With 7 public schools, 2 libraries, 4 colleges and over 20 sites of historical interest, Portland is truly an amazing experience.
