Through the years, Mount Vernon has become a popular spot for commuters to large urban employment centers. Its close proximity to Manhattan gives much of the area a well-developed urban atmosphere. Both shopping and transportation resources are highly developed. Older single-family homes and English Tudor style apartment buildings can be seen along the tree-lined streets in the Fleetwood section located in the northern part of the city, although new construction and multi-family complexes are options as well. Often referred to as a “City of Homes,” Mt. Vernon is also highly regarded for superb schools and the warmth generated by the small-town atmosphere. Recreational opportunities include regional parks, sports leagues and ballfields, tennis courts, playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, senior centers, and many YMCA programs and facilities.
