Suffolk Montauk is located in East Hampton in Suffolk County on the South Shore of Long Island. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,851. It is strategically located at the tip of the South Fork peninsula and has been used as an Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force base. Since Montauk is located 20 miles off the Connecticut coast, it is home to the largest commercial and recreational fishing fleet in New York State, claiming to have more world saltwater fishing records than any other port in the world. It is also home to the Deep Hollow Ranch, the oldest cattle ranch in the United States. Montauk is considered a beach resort, and has become one of the busiest tourist locations within East Hampton. Montauk is host to many restaurants, hotels, bed and breakfasts, and is a popular vacation spot in the warm weather months.
