Hempstead

County: Nassau

Hempstead is the largest township in the United States, encompassing over 142 square miles, with a population of approximately 759,000 people.  Within the town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, and over 65 parks and marinas.  The villages were first established to regulate power and set zoning restrictions.  Eventually, beach resorts became year round communities and the great estates were sold to developers.  Today, Hempstead is readily recognized in academic circles as the home of the internationally recognized Hofstra University.
