East Elmhurst is a culturally diverse area in northwest Queens. It is located north of Corona and Jackson Heights and its east and north boundary is Flushing Bay. Residents are mostly moderate-income families, but there are also low-income areas. During the ‘50’s and '60's East Elmhurst and its neighbor, Corona, was home to legendary African American musicians, civil rights leaders, professionals and athletes including Malcolm X, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gillespie, Harry Belafonte, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays. The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center in East Elmhurst is home of one of the most extensive collections of African American art and literature.
