With about 6,700 residents and 2,100 homes in Souderton in 2007, the borough has grown a hundred-fold since it was chartered in 1887. It is host to the Univest Grand Prix, a one-day road bicycle racing event that is part of the USA Cycling Professional Tour and usually takes place in early September. Sprawling old farmhouses mix with older single-family residences and new construction in a variety of styles and price ranges. One to five-acre lots are not uncommon in some sections. Active civic groups, a grassroots friendliness and old-world Pennsylvania hospitality characterize this community. Shopping facilities and recreation opportunities are available locally, although residents have a plethora of resources from which to choose in the Philadelphia area.
