About Albany
Originally a Dutch outpost called Fort Orange, Albany is the capitol of New York State. It's location near the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers (and the Erie Canal) made it an economic hub in the 1800s. Albany's glory days are captured in the novels of author William Kennedy, particularly Ironweed. Albany has many diverse communities, such as historical Center Square and the hip, trendy Pine Hills and Delaware South neighborhoods. Albany also has the benefit of being a half-days' drive to Boston, Massachusetts, Montreal, Quebec, and New York City, making it the ideal hub for exploring the northeast US.
