Margate is a charming island community in Atlantic County. The city has a total area of 1.6 square miles, and a population over 8,000. It is located on 8.1-mile long Absecon Island, along with Atlantic City and Ventnor City to the northeast, and Longport on the southwest. It is a popular Jersey Shore destination, especially during the summer. The beaches attract surfers, kayaking and sailing, and the bayside docks provided fisherman hours of enjoyment and relaxation. Margate City is the home of Lucy the Elephant, a large wooden elephant, 65 feet tall, over 124 years old, and is the oldest remaining example of zoomorphic architecture left in the United States.
