Major interstates, key highways and country roads strategically crisscross the entire region. Bus and rail service provide local public transportation, as well as rapid transit to New York City and major urban employment centers. Improvements are constant: Just as the New Jersey Transit bus service completed its three-year, multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion, work began on the $400 million rail and station project, the Secaucus Transfer to Manhattan. State-of-the-art international airports in New Jersey and New York that serve this area include Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia.

Throughout Northern New Jersey, new residents will discover an efficient transportation network that offers a well-planned highway system, user-friendly airports, and streamlined mass transit services. The entire Northeast region of the nation — particularly the states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut — is served by closely aligned mass-transit systems that encompass fixed-route buses, charter buses, intrastate passenger rail and bus service, commuter rail services, and ferries. Many cooperative organizations have sprung up to offer assistance and work with commuters in developing viable alternatives to private automobiles.

Drivers License

New residents must obtain a New Jersey drivers license within 60 days after residency has been established. Bring acceptable proof of age, identification, address, and proof of your Social Security number (or exemption) to the Motor Vehicle Agency to purchase an application for driver examination permit. Applicants under age 18 are required to have a parent or guardian sign the application. After studying the manual, bring the exam permit to any Driver Testing Center to take the road test, vision test, and possibly a driving test. Upon receiving your New Jersey drivers license, you must surrender your out-of-state license.

Vehicle Registration & Titling

New residents must obtain a new vehicle registration and title their automobiles in New Jersey with 60 days of establishing residency. Immediately following registration at one of the Motor Vehicle Agencies, vehicles must undergo an annual inspection at a state-operated center. Registration fees vary with the age and weight of the vehicle. New residents must bring their out-of-state title to the Motor Vehicle Agency and complete the sales tax form and application for certificate of ownership. If a lien is involved, you will also need to complete a lien release request. Although the title will be mailed to you later, a receipt copy of the title is given immediately and the vehicle can be registered if properly insured.
