CHILD CARE
Securing quality day care for younger and school age children is one of the foremost concerns for working parents and guardians. Child Care Resource and Referral organizations (CCR&Rs) are your local experts on child care and provide parents with many services, including referrals to local child care providers. Contact the CCR&R agency nearest your home for assistance:

EDUCATIONAL ALTERNATIVES
Private Schools
While some parents are interested in home schooling, others prefer non-public or private education in parochial or independent schools. The Alabama Department of Education licenses private schools and includes a list of these institutions in its annual directory.
PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM
Registration Requirements
For admission to Alabama public schools, new students must bring current report cards and certified health records to the school at the time of application. Immunizations in the proper doses and intervals are required for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, rubella, measles, and mumps. Those entering school for the first time must also present certified proof of age. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1st of the enrollment year are eligible for admission to kindergarten. If you move to Alabama after the registration date, contact your local school district.
Free Immunization Program
The Alabama Vaccines for Children Program supplies vaccine at no cost to public and private health care providers who enroll and agree to immunize eligible children in their practices or clinics. Medicaid, uninsured, and underinsured children from birth through 18 years of age are eligible to receive free vaccine through this program, as well as those who have health insurance that does not include vaccine as a covered benefit.
