Periods of considerable humidity can occur in the summer, although air masses from the Gulf of Mexico are usually replaced by cooler air from the northern Plains and Great Lakes. August offers the most sunshine at 69 percent. Precipitation is distributed evenly throughout the year with an average annual rainfall of approximately 40 inches. Snowfalls of one or more inches average seven times annually, with a yearly total of 22.8 inches.
