Mahopac is a hamlet in the town of Carmel in Putnam County. It has a total area of 6.4 square miles and a population around 8,500. Mahopac was primarily a summer resort, but has since evolved into a popular year round community with many of its residents making the commute to New York City. The Mahopac business area, located at Routes 6 and 6N, thrives as a shopping center for visitors and residents alike. Mahopac encircles a picturesque 587 acre lake, from which it draws its name. Lake Mahopac contains three islands, Fairy, Petre, and Canopus, all of which are privately owned.
