Montgomery Douglass Township was established in 1741 and was settled primarily by German or Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants. The 2000 census placed the population of Douglass Township over 9,000. It has a total area of 15.4 square miles, all of which is land. Its villages include Congo, Gilbertsville and Niantic. Quiet neighborhoods mark the primarily residential township; however, Douglass enjoys a significant segment of commercial activity. Township facilities include a local park, a public playground, an athletic field, a public tennis court, and several basketball courts.
