Matawan Borough offers striking examples of various architectural styles, particularly Victorian. Monmouth Mall is the nearest major shopping center for the community. Recreational opportunities are outstanding, including close proximity to Cheesequake State Park as well as lakes and rivers. Closer to home are lush local parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and multi-purpose trails. Matawan is part of the Bayshore Regional Strategic Plan, an effort by nine municipalities (Aberdeen, Atlantic Highlands, Hazlet, Highlands, Keansburg, Keyport, Matawan, Middletown and Union Beach) in northern Monmouth County to reinvigorate the area's economy by emphasizing the traditional downtowns, dense residential neighborhoods, maritime history, and the natural beauty of the Raritan Bayshore coastline.
